Dog Vomiting
As a dog owner it’s obvious that dog vomiting is fairly common and is not usually a major cause for concern. There is normally a good reason why your dog has thrown up. One of the most common causes is eating grass. Now and then your dog will eat a little grass and their stomachs can’t really cope with it so the dog ends up vomiting.
A change in the dogs diet is another good reason as it may stress them a little which induces vomiting. The best advice is to keep an eye on them to see if they throw up anymore within 24 hours. Even then this may not be a problem if there is no change in the dogs behavior and shouldn’t be a cause for concern unless they become lethargic for instance.
You know your dog however and if you do see some abnormal vomiting stop feeding them for a day. If they have stopped throwing up then slowly introduce some plain food to get them going again. If however their condition is unchanged or worsening then you need to get them to a vetrinarian’s for a check up as soon as possible. In fact, as a general rule if the dog vomiting is continuos for an hour or more, or they have been doing so for more than a day then get them to the vets.
Causes of Dog Vomiting
So on looking for a cause for your dog vomiting the best place to start is without doubt what they last ate. Even though it is obviously unpleasant take a look at the vomit itself. If it contains undigested food then this might indicate food poisoning, anxiety or even just overeating. If you smell a very string odor then this could be indicating an obstruction of some kind.
With the dog vomiting they are losing fluids and are going to become dehydrated. Try to give them water and even ice cubes will help to put the fluids back in and settle their stomach. This is VERY important, dehydration is a killer. If this doesn’t induce the dog vomiting the you can now start to introduce a little food. Keep this food very plain to begin with so as not to aggravate their stomach as this can induce the dog vomiting again.
So in summary these are the things to do if the dog vomiting becomes abnormal.
Firstly, Stop feeding the dog for 24 hours or so.
Next, if the vomiting stops after you stop feeding them, then slowly introduce some simple food. Ideally this food can be a two thirds rice or oatmeal with some well cooked chicken, pork or beef making up the remainder.
Also try not to over feed them at this stage, stick to about half the amount of what they normally eat, maybe even several small meals until the dog vomiting subsides.
