When considering what dog training tips you need to employ, try not to think of what you need from your dog and instead ask yourself the question ‘What does my dog need from me?’. By looking at it the opposite way your dog can really benefit from a training session as you give them what they need. What many people overlook is that a dog simply reacts to it’s owner, it just wants to be accepted as part of the pack/family. The majority also make the mistake of thinking that dogs are much smarter than they actually are. 1. Obedience Class – I would advise any dog owner who is having difficulties with their dog to absolutely give an obedience class a try. An obedience class can be a source of some of the better training advice and tips around. These classes are not just aimed at the dog but also the owner as they will train the two of you to communicate together in harmony. You will learn how to maintain the alpha leader position in your home and also learn how to give strong, specific commands to the dog. Obedience training is relevant across the board whether it’s a new puppy that needs some training or even an older dog with some behavioural problems that need to be addressed.

2. Alpha Position – As I said earlier it is important to remember that dogs are essentially pack animals with animal instincts. A very important, if not the most important consideration when training any dog is to the position you hold within the pack/house. many people look at dog training as something the dog needs to learn, but that is only half of the story. The dog has no idea what it is you want, or for that matter have much of a clue about what you are saying. It is totally up to you to teach the dog, you are the pack leader and you will control the situation. Once this has been established the dog will be much less anxious and relaxed, enabling them to follow your commands without them having to worry about who is protecting them and their pack.

3. Dog Training Tips For Using a Crate – It is good for your dog to have a zone or place in the house that they can call their own. You will need to spend time at home with the dog inside the crate to help them to get used to it and feel comfortable in there. It may seem and unusual method but there are many dog training tips that advocate using a crate to reduce anxiety issues, reduce barking and make housebreaking much easier.

4. Training on the Leash – There are so many dog owners that needlessly suffer with their dog not behaving correctly when it is on the leash. What is required here is not rocket science, but it’s important to get it right as you want to get them into a calm and controlled demeanor. Once there the dog will happily respond to commands and not get so excited about the walk as they so often do. The main issues related to dogs and their leashes are created when they are simply allowed to tug and tug and flit about whilst on the walk. When the dog pulls on it’s leash, STOP, make the dog sit and wait by your side for a moment and then begin walking again. If you keep this up, in no time at all the dog will be associating this pulling as time to stop walking.

Consistency is Key to All Good Dog Training Tips

If they are going to work (and they will) the one thing all of the above dog training lessons have in common and that is you need to employ these tactics with consistency. Your dog is part of the family and although they might seem to be smart, (don’t get me wrong here in many ways they actually are) but so much of what they learn from the training is because it has been repeated consistently. If you apply the rules when you only have a bit of spare time instead of ALWAYS the dog will get confused, excited and ultimately stop following your commands and doing as it pleases. If you need to set a rule then you need to stick to it and ensure that this is applied consistently, before long this rule will be set in stone in the dogs mind and it’s instincts will be tuned to obey the rule, Hey Presto!
