An excellent method of dog housebreaking training is crate training. Crate training utilizes putting your puppy or dog in a confined space for at certain times. You will find that the dog is unlikely to defecate or urinate in the area where they sleep and will usually hold it in for as long as possible when in the crate which really helps as they are learning to wait until the opportunity to relieve themselves arises.

The crate also has other benefits besides being a valuable tool for dog housebreaking training. It can reduce the separation anxiety the dog may feel when you leave the house. It also stops any destructive behaviour and barking caused by that anxiety. In general it makes life a lot easier to get your dog into their own place and off your bed or from sleeping on your couch.

Crates provide this environment perfectly for your dog and gives them a space that is theirs and they are in control of it. When To Start Dog Housebreaking Training

The ideal time to crate train your dog is when it is a puppy and since this is also the best time for dog housebreaking training, the two go together perfectly. To start off put the crate in the family room or where people are likely to be. It is also advisable to put the crate in your bedroom at night for the first few weeks just to keep them feeling safe and calm.

As you put your puppy in the crate ensure they have nice clean and comfy place to sleep and also make sure they have some water in there and their favorite toy. This may seem a bit odd but you don’t want the crate too big as if the dog can walk around inside they will be more likely to mess it. If the dog can turn around comfortably then they will be happy.

Initially you want to try to leave the dog in the crate for a short period when dog housebreaking training just so they can go outside and relieve themselves. As time goes by you can gradually start increasing the amount of the time the dog stays in the crate eventually matching a full nights sleep or the time you are out at work.
