Dog House Breaking
To most new dog owners the need for effective dog house breaking is immediately obvious. At first this may seem to be a difficult thing to achieve, but if you follow a few simple steps I have outlined here then it can be very easy. As with all other types of training, dog house breaking requires you to employ some patience and to be very consistent in what you are doing. The best method for training a dog is to use positive reinforcement when they do something right rather than by scolding or worse, hitting your pet. By rewarding your pet when it does the right thing you are creating a much happier and friendly animal which only goes to speeding up the whole process. If they are confused and stressed, dog house breaking can be much more difficult.
Dog House Breaking – Creating a Den
All dogs are programmed by nature to find an area that they can feel safe and secure in to make their den. This area provides them a space that they can own where they can relax. The dogs are clean animals and they naturally want to keep this area tidy or as clean as possible so they will not want to soil it unless they have no other choice. Try to spend a little time with them as they get used to their new home to help them feel more comfortable.
Dog House Breaking – Meal Schedule
Young puppies say 12 weeks or under do not yet have full control of their colon or bladder and will almost without any warning ‘go’ whenever they feel the urge. You need to keep a close eye on them and watch out for certain signs to indicate they are about to either pee or poop. Sniffing around in circles. The moment you see this say firmly but not shouting ‘Outside’ and then immediately take them outside (or to the designated area) and let them relieve themselves. For effective dog house breaking training it is important to schedule meal times and let the dog out after each meal as this is exactly when they will want to go. As the dog gets a bit older you can extend the time you let them out which will teach them to resist until they can be let out.
Dog House Breaking – Designate a Toilet Area
It’s a good idea to set aside an area in your yard or garden where the dog can go to the toilet. Every time the dog is about to go, take them to this area and let them get on with it. When they do eliminate successfully in the right area lavish praise on your dog to let them know they have done the right thing. Try to keep this area as clean as possible as if it becomes too dirty the dog will look for alternative and cleaner areas.
Dog House Breaking – Leash Training
Try using a leash to keep your dog within the site or their den by fixing the leash to a solid object. This is a fantastic technique to reinforce the good habits you want to install in the dog such as eliminating in the designated area and not on your carpets!
