Crate Training Puppies
Many people, including dog owners carry the misconception the dog crates are somehow inhumane and that crate training puppies will cause them to be depressed and unhappy. They have the view that putting a dog in a crate is some kind of punishment for it and so do not believe in crate training puppies. In actual fact this view is completely wrong. Dogs, by their very nature are den animals and actively seek them out whenever they can. They like nothing more than feeling safe and secure inside their den and do their best to keep it clean, so in fact crate training puppies is actually a very good idea.
Crate Training Puppies
Help your puppy make the crate a home by adding a nice cushion for him or her to sleep on. Also when crate training puppies it is a good idea to place the crate somewhere where the puppy can see all what’s going on around it and not tucked away in a corner somewhere. This will help them to feel safe and part of the family. I would also out a toy or a chewy treat in there to keep them from getting bored.
When crate training puppies you do not want to leave them in the crate for extended periods in the beginning. Try 10 minute to begin with and then gradually increase the time slowly. Remember this is the puppies den not a prison for them. These crates are very useful if you need to be out of the house for a few hours and need to leave puppy in the house on their own, so that is another good reason for crate training puppies.
In an ideal world you would have the crate already in the house before you get your new puppy home. Just leave the crate open and you can the let your puppy search around and find the crate for itself. It is a natural instinct for the puppy to look for a den and when it finds the crate will investigate it. When they do enter the crate, lavish praise on them, puppies love being praised and this will confirm to them that they are doing the right thing. Never scold when crate training puppies, just use lots of positive re-enforcement as this is by far the better method.
After the puppy has entered the crate and you have praised them, close the door. They may whine or whimper a little but don’t be tempted to respond to this and let them out. Just wait with them and give them a little time to settle down. The most effective method for crate training puppies is not to give in easily. Stay consistent, be patient and your puppy will soon learn that this crate is a comfortable and safe place for them.
